The main cost components
- Monthly storage per pallet position.
- Inbound handling — unloading and putaway, per pallet or container.
- Outbound handling — retrieving and loading pallets, or breaking them down.
- Extras — wrapping, labeling, re-palletizing, inventory counts.
What makes one pallet cost more than another
Oversized or overweight pallets, pallets that can't be stacked, very frequent access and short-term storage of very small quantities usually cost more. Standard 48×40 in pallets of stable, stackable cartons are the most economical.
Ways to reduce pallet storage costs
- Build tight, stable pallets so fewer positions are needed — try our pallet calculator.
- Review slow-moving stock monthly.
- Ship palletized rather than floor-loaded when possible to lower receiving fees.
- Consolidate outbound orders to reduce handling.
