Cross-docking vs traditional warehousing

Both move goods through a facility. The difference is how long they stay.

Short answerCross-docking moves goods from inbound to outbound transport with little or no storage, minimizing handling and time. Traditional warehousing stores inventory until it's needed. Cross-docking suits goods with known destinations; warehousing suits inventory you'll sell over time.

When cross-docking wins

  • Splitting a container into shipments for several Amazon fulfillment centers or retail DCs.
  • Consolidating several supplier deliveries into one outbound load.
  • Time-sensitive goods with confirmed orders.

When warehousing wins

  • Ecommerce inventory sold order by order.
  • Reserve stock for Amazon replenishment.
  • Seasonal products bought ahead of demand.
